Decisions

Responding to a hiker who called for a ride home after her gear got wet. Wondering if she made the right choice.

Here’s her story:

I started a section hike this past weekend (not my first)and had to bail early. I’m curious as to what others would have done in the same circumstances especially if the option to get out hadn’t been there.
Basically on the second day of hiking in torrential downpours, after setting up camp for the night I found my pack had leaked. My sleeping bag was soaked and I had no dry clothes to change into. (Lesson learned even with a dyneema pack use a pack liner). I was soaked from hiking in it all day and now that things had slowed i was starting to get very cold. There was nothing dry to even attempt a fire. I messaged my husband to come get me via inReach, packed up the campsite and hiked the two miles to the nearest road crossing where i broke out the emergency blanket, cuddled with a Nalgene bottle of boiling water to stay warm, and made myself visible with my headlamp, while I waited the four hours for him to come to the rescue. I’m thinking through the “what ifs”. Had I been further from home I would have done the same and hitched to a hotel or something. What about not being so close to a road crossing? I’m disappointed that I bailed and feel like I gave up too easily but this was sort of the last straw in a list of little things that gave me the feeling I needed to get off trail. read more

How Much Food for Vegan Hiking?

In response to the question “I’m vegan. What food do I take hiking?”

I sprout mung beans and lentils on trail. Hummus, olive oil, sweet potatoes, corn mush, maple syrup. Did I mention olive oil – most calorie dense food? I was soooo afraid of being hungry and not getting enough calories when I started my thru! My first week southbound from Katahdin, I carried 13 lbs of vegan food for my 10 days to Monson. I had several pounds left!!! What I’ve discovered in my 15 yrs and 10,000+miles of walking is that food can be lightweight, easy, tasty and nutritious. When I count the calories of my day, feeling energetic and satisfied, its more like 2,000 calories. I haven’t consumed 5,000 calories ever! Maybe I don’t hike as hard? Dont know, but the advice that I’ll need 5,000 calories a day (hmm. used to be 3,000) doesnt seem to be real for me. I enjoy fresh foods and have my favorite dehydrated staples to build meals around. I eat pretty much the same foods on trail as I do off trail. Happy to explore this with you! read more

Maine Ideas: Fine Without My Brain

My PACK brain, that is! In my constant effort to lighten my pack and still have what I need I took out a few items in Monson, Maine. It’s been a week without them and all is well! I sent away my pack brain, knitted scarf, extra pack liner bag and didn’t miss them.
At Caratunk, I took one more step and ordered a lighter sleeping bag. What’s more, I wore my short sleeved shirt instead of my long, hot shirt. I could even wear the short one at night, so maybe don’t need a second shirt! I sent the extra shirt away from Stratton, Maine.
Lightening my pack gets done one piece of gear at a time! Trying a few days without things. Taking chances. Trusting. read more
