Fabulous Foods for Backpacking: Watermelon

Watermelon is a surprising food to dehydrate! It works great, though and provides a sweet, chewy, and refreshing snack on the trail. Watermelon is one of those foods that tastes so good on the trail that I look forward to hiking so I can eat it! My taste buds light up when I bite into the concentrated taste of watermelon. It’s a good morale booster too!

It’s simple to prepare. Slice watermelon pulp into 1/4″ slices and lay them on the mesh of the dehydrator trays. Dehydrate at 105 degrees F for 12-15 hours, turn then leave another 10-14 hours, removing pieces when they feel dry and leathery. The pieces will dry unevenly, so check during the final drying phase and remove pieces when they are done.
